Urgent Proactive Security Update - Apex Digital Servers - September 2016

Summary: We will be updating and restarting our NZ, AU, UK and USA servers to address a Xen security issue before the details of the issue become public.

Who is affected: All Apex clients with websites hosted on our NZ, AU, UK or USA servers will be affected by this update. If you are unsure which of our servers we are hosting your website on, drop us an email to support@apexdigital.co.nz and we will get straight back to you.

Detail: The Xen project report a security issue.  Details of the issue and fix are available only to the Xen security pre-disclosure list.  Details of the advisory and any fix are currently embargoed to anyone (including our customers) not on that list.  We are unable to provide further details about the nature or severity of the issue until the issue becomes public.

Apex Digital will be updating our host server software stacks to address this issue.  To do this we will be stopping the Virtual Machines on the host servers, updating the software and restarting the servers.  Virtual Machines will then start up as normal.

The software update process typically takes 20-60 minutes per server if all goes well.  45 minutes is fairly typical however we reserve a 2 hour window for the upgrades.

Timing:  Times are New Zealand Standard Time

The updates will start within 0-2 hours of the stated start time.

Due to the security nature of the issue, the embargo deadline and the number of affected hosts that require updating there is limited flexibility on the update timing.  Our goal is to update as many hosts as soon as possible.
